Help for a good cause

21 May 2012 - 03:10 PM

Hi guys,

I'm doing a sponsored run from Coatbridge to Edinburgh Castle which is around 34 miles. It's in memory of a little boy called John Andrew Byrne who sadly died on the 8th of this month. I am raising money for the Scottish Cot Death Trust.

Having just became a new father myself, i can't even begin to imagine what people that lose a child go through, so i want to raise awareness and also help the memory of this little boy live on.

I know it's a hard time financially just now but any donation would be greatly appreciated, no matter how big or small.

Thanks guys,

Web Censorship

10 May 2012 - 07:13 PM

I know what your probably thinking, "Oh god, not another one of these kind of threads!". To be perfectly honest with you, i thought the same but recently i have seen an increase in some not so nice things on the internet and thought i would share my thoughts. I'm mainly sharing my thoughts to convince myself i'm not crazy and there is actually people that think the same :P

To start off, this all kicked off a while back with people trying to censor what we view on the internet, whether it's the government or our ISP's. At first, i was against it 100%, nobody should have the right to tell me what i can and cannot view on the internet, right?. Well i have taken a step back and had a look at the websites i go onto on a regular basis and had a think to myself. One of these sites is the popular social networking site, Facebook.

Now, where my point comes from. I have a very keen interest in crime, criminals, gangs, mafia's ect. I do a lot of reading up on these subjects and although i think crime is wrong 100%, the law is there to be followed, it still interest's me. In my time of looking at some cases, i have come across website's that offer videos. In these videos you can see people being killed, decapitated and to be perfectly honest it makes you feel physically sick. I block every single website i come across that's like that, mainly because i have a young sister and a son, if they had to come across a site like that it would scar them for life.

Facebook is a breeding ground for the kind of people that do the things in these videos, the people that video it and the people who create the websites that host them. In the past few months, i have come across a video of a person being stabbed, a dog being beaten to death and a child being beaten by his mother, when i say child i mean around 3-4 months old. What kind of website would you find such a thing? Facebook. The three videos were found on Facebook, via people's status updates saying how sick it was.

I'm not saying Facebook is responsible for this, it isn't on their website so they can't do anything about it, but someone is responsible. The chances are, if you had to try and find the people responsible for the websites, you would have no chance. They are probably using offshore hosting, fake names etc. and this is where someone has to step in. If you can't take down the website, make sure nobody can get to it.

This is a different part to internet censorship than has been in the news and online recently, the government's or ISP's should be going out of their way to block such websites. I accessed these sites very easily so anyone with a little internet savvy will be able to do the same. Being only 18 myself, i know how computer smart kids are these days and i have no doubt in my mind they would be able to access such sites. The way i think of it, if you want to watch videos of people being brutally murdered, tortured, poor defenseless kid's being beaten to within an inch of their life, defenseless animals being kicked and punched to death then there is something missing inside you. No normal person wants to witness anything like that and as far as i'm concerned, if you want to watch it, you're just as bad as the people doing it.

Obviously, there are thing's that shouldn't be censored but there are also things that should. Being a new dad myself, i would hate for my son to come across one of these websites and will be taking every step possible to make sure he can't come across them. We need to protect children who use the internet, yes there are people like myself who install filters and block inappropriate sites such as these ones, but there are also children with parent's who don't know about filters, don't know how to install them etc. so we need to protect those children. Some of the stuff on these websites could mess with a child's head quite easily and it took me a while to get over some of the stuff i seen, and i'm an adult.

Anyway, i'm going on a bit, what are your thoughts on this?

Cheers,
William

PostPals

01 March 2012 - 11:13 PM

Hi guys,

I don't usually do this type of thing, but to be honest, it doesn't take alot, so that's why i'm asking. http://www.postpals.co.uk is a website setup by a girl called Vikki, who is very ill with M.E and bed-bound at the time of setting up PostPals.

PostPals is basically a website that has loads of different kids on it who suffer from a whole range of illnesses. You can send them letters, presents ect. Even just the smallest letter could change one of these kid's days, and i know if someone from the states had to send one over, it would be alot different obviously because of the distance.

I have a kid on the way myself, and i think this is why it's getting to me a little more because of how young some of these kids are.

So if you can, please spare a couple of minutes and some spare cash and send one of these kids a gift, a letter, anything. It could change a young kids day.

The website is http://www.postpals.co.uk - It's for a good cause!

Groupon - Avoid Like The Plague!

25 January 2012 - 01:03 PM

Ok, picture the scene. I was told by a friend that they had gotten a cheap meal for two on Groupon.co.uk. Something stupid like £17 for a three course meal for two including a drink each or something like that. So me, being a sucker for a good deal signed up, and started recieveing emails everyday about all these great deals.

So, Christmas is coming up, i've just been laid off from my job and i'm on the lookout for a gift for my fiance. Guess what? a nice little necklace pops up with a Swarovski pendant on it. 60% off which means i'm getting it for £20. So, as you do, i buy it there and then. The current date would have been the 12th of December 2011. So that gives them nearly 2 weeks to process my payment and send me my necklace, delivery time on the site i was getting it from was 3-5 working days.

The way Groupon works is, you pay Groupon, who then, pays the supplier of the product. You get an email to go onto the suppliers website, enter all your details and enter your promotion code. You get it for free, because you've already paid for it and it gets sent to you. Done.

So, i'm sitting on the 23rd of December 2011 thinking to myself, that should be here by now. If it's not here today or tomorrow then i'm not going to be happy. So i raise a ticket on the suppliers website asking them what the hold up was. I didn't go in all guns blazing, just asked them if there was a problem with delivery or my product. I'm still, to this day waiting for a reply from them.

So i contacted Groupon on Christmas day after having to tell my fiance i didn't have anything to give her on Christmas day because i spent my last on the necklace. Needless to say, i felt horrible about it and even though she said it was fine, i couldn't help feel guilty about it. So that being said, i sent groupon an email that day.

Hi there,

I bought the Sterling Silver Necklaces With Swarovski Elements Teardrop Pendant from SilvexCraft through groupon on the 12th of December 2011. I then go an email the following day saying i could take the order further by going onto the SilvexCraft website and ordering it. I did that on the 13th of December 2011. I was buying this as a Christmas present for my girlfriend who really loved the necklace and was looking forward to wearing it on Christmas day, and had told everyone about it.

It took SilvexCraft 4 days to send the item from when they were paid and it is now Christmas eve, and i still don’t have it. I am very disappointed with customer service from SilvexCraft and will be sending them an email aswell, even though i already tried contacting them through their site and go no response.

I know a few people who have recommended using Groupon to me, and this was my first time using it. I am very disappointed with the service and i wont be using Groupon again, oh and by the way, this has pretty much ruined my partners Christmas as now i have very little to give her tomorrow.

Thanks a bunch,
Unhappy Customer William.

As you can probably tell from the email, i wasn't to chuffed about it, so i got an automated response that day which i was expecting anyway. The next day i got a reply from "Kyle K"...

Hi William,

Sorry to hear about your bad experience. I have submitted a missing order request on your behalf, please allow 10 working days for head office to investigate and respond.

If there is anything else i can do to help in the mean time please let me know,
Kind regards
Kyle K

So that's fair enough, i'll give them their due, they got back to me and were going to help. So 11 days later, still no response. Next email to them from me...

Hi,

It has been more than 10 days, i have still not received a response from you, and still not received the item i ordered. This is absolutely disgusting customer service and i will never be using Groupon again, and will be advising others to do the same.

William

To which i get the reply, four days later:

Quote

Hi William,

I am sincerely sorry this deal turned out to be such a bad experience for you. Thanks for letting us know. I have forwarded your comments to all involved parties. We are always looking for ways to improve your experience and will do our best to make sure this doesn't happen again.

I have escalated your details as a matter of priority to find out why your order hasn't arrived. Their main aim is to dispatch the item, so if there are no problems with their process you should receive your item shortly. Alternatively, the partner business will contact you directly to inform you of the status of your package. Please allow between 7 and 14 working days for the partner to process the order.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.

Kind regards,
Sarah L

Guess what, 15 days later, no reply and still no product, a full month after i was hoping to give it as a gift.

As a matter of priority, their not being very fast about it. Their customer service is absolutely disgusting and i am really quite angry about the matter and they way it was dealt with.

So i have now stopped emailing them because i really don't see the point. I just wanted to warn everyone that even thinks about using Groupon, don't. This is my first experience with them and i can honestly say, it will be my last.

By the way, the URL is http://www.groupon.co.uk if anyone's interested...

William.

groupon, deals, deal of the day, discount, money off, not received

Did You Know Thread...

13 September 2011 - 10:05 PM

Post in here all your facts, useless or useful, it doesn't matter :)

Did you know that the paper notes we use today as money, goes way back to the 1600's. First introduced in England by goldsmiths, who, at that time were "Banks". People would come into the goldsmiths, recieve a secure box to put all their gold in, and the goldsmith would keep it. He would then give you a reciept which said "I promise to pay the bearer the sum of....". People then started to swap these reciepts instead of money, and thus the bank note was born. Thats also why you get the "I promise to pay the bearer the sum of..." on all sterling notes :)
