A little tribute to Michael Caine today on the board...outstanding career and a super cool actor. Again all the talk of money got me started down this road...

Any of you guys seen "Flawless"? It's a 2007 movie with Michael Caine and Demi Moore set in the 60s. Best job of recreating the 60s I've ever seen. I really forgot the movie wasn't made in the 60s when I was watching. Amazing movie about diamonds. Highly recommended...

For some reason, I remembered this movie as a 60s era movie, and I have no idea why, but I thought Tippi Hedren was in it. Talk about selective memory or whatever. Well, I was Googling Tippi Hedren to find the movie, and I found a little bit from Hedren on our old friend Alfred Hitchcock. She said that Hitchcock ruined her career by putting her in harm's way in the movie "The Birds". Not surprising from an American leading lady I suppose. Hitchcock was, of course a genius.

She said of Sir Alfred:

“We are dealing with a brain here that was an unusual genius, and evil, and deviant, almost to the point of dangerous, because of the effect that he could have on people that were totally unsuspecting.”

I would say that a rivalry developed between the two during their time working together to say the least. Hedren, thankfully is still alive and looks great at 82. Here's a photo from the August 3 article:

If I were pushed to name one of my most memorable comedy movies, it would probably have to be Planes, Trains and Automobiles (sure I've mentioned this before) - not a particular classic by anyone's standards, but quite possibly just tuned directly into my humour around that time, and still makes me chuckle. The late John Candy did a fantastic job I have to say, with Steve Martin complementing the duo - always easy to say after the event, but I couldn't picture any two actors making this film as good as it was.

If we're talking classics, or particularly inspirational movie's I'd have to say amongst my few classic titles would undoubtedly have to be the Shawshank Redemption, Schindler's List and The Green Mile - not an exhaustive list at all, but just a few I can pull from my head at the moment :)

Ooooh, movies!! Love 'em!! I have well over 300 DVDs in my own collection. I watch my favorites over and over - too many to name, the list would be far too long.

Love Michael Caine, and the fact that he has always stayed true to his heritage. Can still remember his first 'big' movie, Alfie. Oddly, he played a pretty boy/ladies man in that one. And Alfred Hitchcock is indeed a legend, nobody did (or does) suspense like Hitchcock.

Plains Trains and Automobiles, yes very funny... a case of perfect casting I would say. John Candy is one of my all time favorite comedy actors, his "Uncle Buck" is hilarious. Shawshank redemption is a masterpiece, The Green Mile is an emotional roller coaster, not a fan of Schindlers List though... too depressing for my taste.

I've never had much time for Oscar winners, or artsy films in general.... films such as Chariots of fire and Gandhi were pretty to look at and well done but just downright boring IMO. Don't really like war films either.

Give me comedy, good sci-fi, true crime, and particularly suspense/thriller. Of course, I have to sit through the odd chick flick occasionally to pacify she who must be obeyed... surprisingly, I quite enjoy the majority... does that mean I have too many X chromosomes? :)

Is it just me or don't they do anything as well as they used to? Music, movies, all seemed so much better back in the day. Oh boy, I must be getting too old.

I must say though, the recent movie "Avatar" is exceptional. I've watched it 3 or 4 times, brilliant movie!! And yes, it is part of my DVD collection.

Great stuff guys...gotta go with great sci-fi, but anything space does it pretty well for me. I'll take high drama, especially situation drama, too...Clint Eastwood stuff. I watched 3 or 4 Cagney movies in a row yesterday...wow...he was greatness for real. The three I watched were Captains of the Clouds (1942), The Fighting 69th (1940), and Each Dawn I Die (1938). I thought I had kind of lost it for the old movies, but watching Cagney brought it back more than I expected.

Watched a recent version of Treasure Island that I think was made for BBC TV. Wow, what an unbelievable story. Good to see modern actors and sets live up to the story. Of the new ones War Horse is good and Hugo with Ben Kingsley was good if a little weird. Tron Legacy is good.

I guess I'll take comedy where I can find it mostly...the old Hope movies were crazy as hell sometimes. Jerry Lewis is a damn riot to me. Abbott and Costello basically tear me to pieces I guess would be the words. I think I get the biggest laughs at the worst movies. Some of the old 40s and 50s movies are so bad it's impossible to watch them without laughing. Mystery Science Theater movies are the ones I mean here.

One good old movie I recommend if you like epic tales. It's not all that famous, "The Long Ships" with Richard Widmark and Sidney Poitier is a good old movie. Vikings go on a mission to save their own hides from Poitier's "mare of steel"...

Just looking at Steve Martins face cracks me up. My kind of movies are Comedies, Sci-Fi, Horror, Slasher, and good old Stallone, Bruce Willis, The Arnold Action flicks. Oh and Antonio Banderas in Desperado, kind of an action western type with Selma "hot" Hayek.
Can't leave out "Dirty" Harry.

Funny you should mention Michael Caine. Great actor. I just saw him in that second Batman movie (with Heath Ledger) about week or so ago. He played Alfred the butler (as he did in the first movie and. I guess, the third). I don't recall all the movies in which he had a role, but I have seen him in a number of movies and he always does well. I think in the last 20 years, I have actually gone to 2 movies. Back in 1992,, my wife and I went to see the Star Trek movie at the $1.50 theater (played 2nd or 3rd run movies). There were 5 couples in the theater and the sound was so loud, it hurt your ears and wanted to make you upchuck. I found the manager and requested the sound to be lowered - he said OK. After a few minutes the sound was still way too loud and one couple left. Again, I requested the manager to have the sound lowered and he told me they were required to play at ear drum bursting level. He refunded my money and we left. The next time was on a father's day, when my youngest son said he would take me to see the X-Files (also a 2nd run). That didn't pan out too well either, but that is another story.

I think someone mentioned Tippi Hedren. She was one of my "screen loves" way back then. I was also in "love" with Kim Novak, Doris Day and a few others way back then. I did like John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery, Harrison Ford, Alec Guinness and a few others. I prefer the watching on TV, action type movies, a couple of "cops and robbers" and decent science fiction. Now a days, I try to limit my time - otherwise you could end up watching 24/7.
