Goodday all: Got some off topic bally for the afternoon...AM?
In the years of yore we used to gawk at sterios. Great ads they used to have in the newspapers with a 1000 different setups, and you could buy them all in parts.
Now we have the PC. The rev started out the same way as it did with the old sterios, but the multi-media PC fizzled with the weak tech products of the mid 90s. Today the PC is starting to make sense as a platform for true multi-media, so I am blindly expecting to see a reemurgence of the concept with marketers.
So the topic/question: What is the most over the top far gone good thing you have ever seen/owned associated with a PC? Really get the wow factor out for this one. Something that really got you...program, game, rig, setup, PC part, anything...
For me, I totally got the wow factor of the PC itself. This goes back to my first one which was a 486 DX2 machine. I hadn't looked at a PC since the original Apple came out in the late seventies and a little later some IBM workstations in college, so I was blown away that it was possible to own such a rig. Alas it was all potential that had me, not really the rig. Still shocks me the games that could be run on those pathetic setups...and the office software, too. I had Access doing back filps. But the wow factor was definitely there for me with that first look and internet dial up...

Maybe going a little too far over the top, but for me it has to be these guys who cram NASA into their bedrooms - take a look at this setup ...

I used to have one of them old stereos connected to my PC for audio FS. Then, sadly, one day the ole stereo carked it. I immediately began searching for a replacement and couldn't believe how much money I'd have to part with for just a basic little unit with two small speakers, it seemed I was going to have to fork out in the vicinity of $300.00 for anything half decent.
Then, out of the blue, inspiration!! While looking around I noticed you could buy a pretty decent home theater unit for a lot less money. Hmmm, 5 speakers instead of two, plus passive sub-woofer, surround sound, all radio bands and a disc player - no comparison really. I ended up buying a little LG home theater system for under $200.00, hooked it all up and when those first melodic strains of AC/DC boomed out to me...man I tell ya...that was a WOW factor!

Gotta love AC/DC Claw! I actually met the original lead singer Bon Scott once, many years ago. Sadly, he passed away at an early age (33) from alcohol poisoning. I've been fortunate to see AC/DC live in concert 3 times...awesome!!!
