Sunday 5 February 2012  4:54 p.m.

I am still a newbie with a 1 year old laptop and using Windows 7 Home Premium.

Under Win XP and its search function you could enter a word to find within the a file itself, not necessarily in the file name.

This was so good, but I cannot seem to be able to do that with Win 7. Yes it searches file names but I want to search say word (*.doc) files with any word say "barometer"? Or excel (*.xls) with the word "contribution". That general sort of thing.

Is there a freeware utility out there that does that or can Win 7 do that already for me, if I but knew how to use it?

Can anyone help?  :bye:

All the best,

Peter M.

Hey Peter - Windows 7 Search feature already has most of what you are after built-in, you just have to learn how to use it mate. You'll need to do some reading, suggest you start here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows7/Advanced-tips-for-searching-in-Windows

This may also help: http://www.windows7news.com/2009/06/30/finding-files-faster-with-windows-7-search/

If, after further research, you are still dissatisfied with the native search feature, then Claw's suggestion sounds fine. Or AgentRansack which has always been highly regarded and is another good alternative: http://www.freewarebb.com/files/file/8860-agent-ransack-2010-build-762/
