Kaspersky, NOD? They doesn't have free versions.

For example, Kaspersky free tool can't update bases, only by redownload new version. This is not "free antivirus" behavior.

Beeen very happy with Avira for quite some time but I switched to a Giveaway Ashampoo AntiMalware because it seems to have a wider scope on other malware than virusses. Was I right? Anyway, I'm still virusfree and, in both cases, scans with several different scanners only report tracking cookies. I mainly use Maxa (free version) and Nirsoft's FlashCookiesView fot that purpose. Only, SuperAntiSpyware will usually detect somz more ...
As Ashampoo (any idea about the antivirus engine they use?) is not listed, I voted fot Avira here. Both these programs also are not to heavy on resources.

I made a choice a few years ago to try Avast AV and have stuck with it since. I haven't recently tried any of the others so cannot really comment about their effectiveness.  I might setup a VM later and try some out.

I used to use AVG, till I found Avast & I've been using it for about 5 years without any problems & never had a virus.
