For me, the time was 1982 (oh god) and I was a mere 11 years old - I remember buying my very first 7" (seven inch) record ... weren't things much simpler back then??.   Tell us the first tune you bought and stick a link in from youtube (just paste the entire link in your post and it will show like below )

Modern Romance were a British pop music band that found popularity in the early 1980s. Formed in 1980 by previous members of an earlier punk rock band, The Leyton Buzzards, the band enjoyed a string of UK chart hits before they broke up in 1985. They are probably best known for their hit single, Best Years of Our Lives, which made the UK Top 10 and later featured in the movie Shrek (2001) and its subsequent soundtrack.

Geoffrey Deane and David Jaymes formed Modern Romance in 1980, having previously been the mainstays of the punk parody band the Leyton Buzzards. Following hot on the heels of their début UK chart success Everybody Salsa in 1981, Modern Romance reached the Top Ten of the UK Singles Chart with Ay Ay Ay Ay Moosey - an eponymous chorus chanting salsa linked lyrics. After this, they scored a #2 hit on the Billboard Dance chart with the single "Can You Dance", backed with a 'clubland mix' of the same track and another song, called Bring On the Funkateers. After covering the 1955 hit Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White, Deane departed the band to pursue solo projects.

Wow, back in the day we had no option but to buy records.  No downloading back then
I can't remember exactly when but I'm sure it was late seventies (I would have been about 13) when I bought Fleetwood Mac's Rumours album.  I heard "Don't Stop" and was sold.  I still have the album today but dont have any decks to play it on.
Think I may have to change that situation now that I've heard this track again

Bit too early for me G, I was only 6 then mate - they are a great group though, listened to many of their songs, and yes, Don't Stop is a fab one

I'm never buy "singles", because this thing created for moneymaking, not for "art/creation/creativity"(Don't know right word).

My first purchased album was "Blink-182 - Enema of the State" And I'm still love this one.

Also I'm never buy album without pre-listening. It's illegal, but after that I'm really know what I'm buing.

Like FF,I never bought singles either. My first albums though were Alice Cooper and Led Zeppelin!!!! Oh, and that Ramones song "Baby I Love You"was originally done by 60s pop singer Andy Kim!
