Here's a thread that I guess we could all benefit from - we sometimes hear of an application that can do a specific job and wonder if there is a freeware alternative.   If you know of any freeware that matches or exceeds a commercial product, tell us about it here and I'll add it to our list :)
Marko

Commercial to freeware (alphabetical)
Adobe Premiere => Lightworks, VirtualDub, AviDemux, trakAxPC, VLMC (VideoLan Movie Creator)
Adobe Photoshop => Gimp, GimpShop
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom => RawTherapee
Visio (Microsoft) => ArgoUML

Freeware to commercial (alphabetical)
ArgoUML => Visio (Microsoft)
AviDemux => Adobe Premiere
Gimp => Photoshop
Lightworks => Adobe Premiere
RawTherapee => Adobe Photoshop Lightroom
trakAxPC = > Adobe Premiere
VirtualDub => Adobe Premiere
VLMC (VideoLan Movie Creator) => Adobe Premiere

Please remember that we have people from many different timezones on the site and if your post requires a reply it could take longer at some at some points because of this.

A ver of Gimp that closer resembles Photoshop...

GimpShop http://gimpshop.com/

Adobe also has a free online editor called Photoshop editor express

Also, one that will come up in discussion is award winning Paint.NET

One i forgot to mention is Artweaver Free, which is said to be a stripped down version of photoshop. It does look alot like photoshop but i've yet to try it.
