Performing routine maintenance is particularly important for your hard drive, I personally use the built-in Windows defrag every week as a matter of course, keeps everything nice a neat so the hard drive is able to access the data in a mthodical manner, but the question is what do you use (if anything) to keep your hard drive in tip-top condition?.

Another interesting poll Marko.  :good:

I actually utilise dedicated freeware apps and a suite. CCleaner I use about once per week, and around every four weeks or so I trot out TweakNow PowerPack and put that through its paces.

I use a combination of utilities.  The Diskeeper Defrag is a commercial version of the software that Microsoft bought from Diskeeper which is included in the O/S.  Their Commercial version does a bit more and works in the background if you want it too.   I have several freeware items I use as well.  I've used the PC Tools that are included with the commercial Zone Alarm bundle to clean the registry and defrag that as well.  It does work.  I can't see any problems with it but at the same time I'm not really sure how big a difference it makes other than it reassures me some disconnected .dll's and other files are fixed properly or removed properly.
The system does seem more stable.  So now that I've typed that I'll probable get a blue screen... 8-)
Seriously if anyone has good recomendations for what works well for them I'll try it as I've got 5 machines here.

Hi Marko & Jim,
I'm a bit of a let-down to freeware as I use Auslogics "Boost Speed" which I received via a mag. cover disc some years ago; so it was free but not freeware if you see what I mean. I should add that I'm still using XP.

I do this but is there any point (in defraging) nowadays with fast HDD access etc? Am I leading us off the topic?

Regards to all the team

No, not at all mate. This poll is all about computer maintenance. :good:

Absolutely!! Although I'll qualify that by saying; the amount of used space on the main drive and overall computer usage have a big bearing on how often. It's very subjective, there is no 'set' period applicable for all.

I use my machine a lot. I defrag about every 2 months (or whenever there is any noticeable slowdown).  :good:

Have a read through HERE.

Cheers....Jim
