Microsoft first mentioned plans to scrap it's failed commercial anti virus software Live Onecare and replace it with a free product, codenamed 'Morro', just before last Christmas. Now, according to a report from Reuters, they are preparing to release the free Morro "soon" and Live Onecare will be discontinued on 30th June.

I seriously doubt this piece of news will have the traditional publishers of AV freeware quaking in their boots, Microsoft do not have a great record in this genre. Besides which, it seems ironic to me that MS should develop a product to prevent attacks through vulnerabilities in software which originated from MS in the first place.

On the other hand, maybe...just maybe, MS have learned from experience and Morro will turn out be a viable alternative....only time will tell.

Windows 7

For those of you who may not have heard yet....MS is planning for Windows 7 to hit retail shelves and start showing up on new PCs on October 22. It will be available, for most markets, in five editions: Starter, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate. Pricing structure remains an unknown quantity and, if history is anything to go on, shall most likely remain that way until very close to the proposed release date.
