Google Chrome - Test Your Website with Different Browser Sizes

Webmasters - see how sites will appear under various browsing scenarios with the "Resolution Test" plug-in.

When developing a website, it may prove useful to see how it appears with different browser sizes to help ensure it looks OK with users who have a variety of different monitor resolutions. While earlier web sites had to perform well in 640x480 and 800x600 resolutions, most people now have monitors supporting 1024x768 or greater, though they may not all have their browsers maximized.

To test for different scenarios inside Google Chrome you can install the "Resolution Test" extension. This lets you resize the browser window to one of several 'normal' resolutions such as 1024x768 or 1280x800, or you can resize to a custom resolution. Plus, if you need to test a website under a variety of resolutions it can open multiple Chrome windows....

Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 - Stop Showing the New Tab Page

Stop showing the new tab page when you open new tabs from Internet Explorer 8.

When opening new tabs from Internet Explorer 8, by default the browser opens a "new tab page" or about:Tabs. From here Microsoft asks "what do you want to do next" and offers options such as re-opening closed tabs, using inPrivate browsing, and using an Accelerator.

While some people may like this tab welcome screen, others would rather show just a blank tab. And yet others may want their home page to appear in all new tabs....

Windows 7 - See Which Services Are Related to a Process

If a svchost.exe image is using a lot of memory or CPU time, view its related services to help diagnose problems.

The Windows 7 Task Manager is useful to manage processes and services, check the CPU and networking usage, and shut down stuck programs that don't want to end. While using this tool, you may have noted many svchost.exe processes that act as Host Process for Windows Services. Curious about which services are related to which processes, especially if one is running amok, taking a lot of memory and/or CPU time?

1. In the "Processes" tab of the "Windows Task Manager", right-click a svchost.exe process....

The freeware Rapid Typing Tutor displays animation while taking users through a succession of keyboarding drills.

Rapid Typing Tutor for Windows aims to help speed up your typing through a series of lessons. This freeware application will have you start out with just a few letters, work your way through punctuations and short syllables, tackle capital letters, key in longer words, and then run through digits and finally longer blocks of text. More advanced typists can jump around to specific lessons if desired.

While typing, to keep you entertained an animated aquarium scene appears behind the characters to be keyed (this can be turned off if you find it distracting). A visual keyboard appears below, with transparent hands moving as you type....

iGoogle - Match the Falling Colored Balls in an iGoogle Game

Clear matching colored balls in Trio before they reach the top of the screen.

Trio is a variation of a "Match 3" game that you can add to your iGoogle page. Balls in groups of three continually fall down the screen. Your job is to match three balls of the same color horizontally, vertically, or diagonally to remove them from the playing area. Once the balls reach the top of the screen, the game is over.

The cursor left and right keys move the falling Trio, and cursor down drops it. The cursor up key rotates the colored balls in the Trio so you can align three matching colored balls. Since games can last a long time, you may pause the action. The game keeps track of the top score and your rank....
