When we last updated VLC Media Player (VideoLAN) we scanned it using VirusTotal and checked the developers site was not listed negatively with any of the reputable site advisory sites such as WOT or SiteAdvisor. We pride ourselves on safe downloads from honest and trustworthy developers
This is a must have program. you may not need all of the programs, but if you do you will have them. I downloaded VLC DVD player 3 months ago and i am very happy with it.

Hmmm, haven't noticed that myself (poor video playback quality that is). I have GOMPLayer installed on one machine (running Vista) and VLC on another (running Win7). They are both very good players and I'm very happy with them. Quality of playback is comparable....both look fine to me. Then again, my eyes aren't getting any younger! 
Big advantage with VLC (and GOMPlayer) is their versatility, as Bala said....will play just about anything, so the need for 'extra' codecs is rare.

This version is CRAP! Makes my FLAC files sound undewater and I've had quite a bit of pixelation in video mode. I just signed up here 10 minutes ago because CNET sold out and throws so much adware on your computer it's just stupid. When you read reviews about software that has those problems associated with it the last thing you'd expect is the site you're on to be doing it 10 times more.
Still, this version sucks, I'm looking for 1.11 but haven't figured out how to get there OR if this even has older files. We will see won't we,,.

CNET owned by the American media conglomerate CBS, sold-out their scrupulous quite some time ago.
regarding VLC player ... the most recent update to version 2.0.2 notwithstanding the small incremental version number is in fact a major release. Bound to be some bugs. I recommend this for FLAC or any other audio file.

If there's a difference between FLAC playback in VLC and Foobar I can't hear enough to worry; YMMV. Anyway VLC is most useful for the video functions like subtitle delay from the keyboard, etc., and the interface for such a comprehensive, FREE app is excellent. Hey NorCalDaddio, try listening to some happy music:)
